A Korean phone number: do you still need one?
The old advice was that Korea runs on Korean phone numbers and a tourist without one is locked out. In the summer of 2026 Naver, Baemin and CatchTable all dropped that requirement. Here is what still wants a 010 number, and how to get one if you need it.
Why Korea was the country where the phone number mattered and why that is fading
Korea built its consumer internet around carrier-verified identity. For a decade, signing up for almost anything meant an SMS code to a Korean number, and often a full identity check against a Korean carrier account. Visitors were locked out of taxis, deliveries, restaurant waitlists and payments, and the standard advice became: get a Korean number at the airport.
That advice is now a year out of date. Under pressure from a record year of foreign visitors and a government push to make the country usable without a resident ID, the biggest platforms rebuilt their sign-ups in the first half of 2026. The result is that a data-only eSIM plus your own home number, left switched on for texts, now covers almost everything a two-week visitor does.
Not everything. The table below is the honest state of play on September 7, 2026, and it will keep changing, which is why it carries a date.
Which Korean apps still need a 010 number app by app, September 2026

Naver's own press release of 9 June 2026: foreign visitors can verify with a passport and use Naver Booking, Order and Pay. Naver is Korea's Google, and this single change removed the biggest wall a visitor hit.
Korea's largest delivery app now takes orders from a foreign mobile number with an overseas card, Apple Pay or Alipay+, under a deal with Seoul city reported on 1 August 2026. Late-night chicken to the guesthouse is now a data-only problem.
Kakao T accepts a +1 number and CatchTable's international app books on email. Taxis and restaurants, the two things a 2024 guide would have told you needed a 010 number, no longer do.
The government cut the prepaid-line limit for a passport from two to one, after a National Assembly audit found carriers activating foreigner lines on passport copies before arrival and foreign-name burner phones rising to more than 71,000 a year.
Mandatory for Korean IDs since March 2026 and rolling out across every carrier and reseller channel from July. Foreign documents, a residence-card photo match or a passport chip read against immigration records, are scheduled for the second half of 2026. We could not confirm it live for tourists on September 7, 2026.
Coupang still wants a Korean-carrier SMS code, and the waitlist tablets outside popular restaurants still ask for a local number. If your trip depends on either, the carrier eSIM is still the answer and the next section prices it.

What a tourist 010 number can and cannot do SMS codes yes, identity certification no
Korean services use two different checks and visitors constantly confuse them, because Korean guides assume you already know.
SMS verification. The app sends a code to your number. A tourist 010 number from LG U+, SK Telecom or KT receives it, and LG U+ and krsim both say so explicitly. This is what Coupang and the waitlist kiosks want, and a carrier eSIM solves it.
Identity certification, 본인인증, through the PASS app or a carrier check. This matches your name, birth date and carrier account against a national ID or a residence card. A tourist number does not pass it, because there is no Korean ID behind it. Banking, Kakao Pay's higher tiers, Naver Pay's domestic flow and most government sites sit behind this wall, and no product on this site gets a short-stay visitor through it. Naver's passport verification is the first mainstream route around it, and it is specific to Naver.
So the practical map for a two-week trip: a data eSIM covers Naver Map, Kakao T, KakaoTalk, Papago, Korail, T-money, CatchTable, Baemin and Naver's own services. A carrier eSIM adds Coupang, the kiosks, and being reachable on a local number. Nothing adds Korean banking, and you were not going to need it.
- Verify KakaoTalk at home on your own number while you still have a signal on it. Registering it fresh from Korea on a data-only eSIM is the classic day-one failure.
- Register Kakao T at home too; the +1 approval can take a day or two, and you want it done before you are standing outside Incheon at midnight.
- Leave your home line on for texts, with data roaming off. Every code from a Western service, and from any Korean service that has opened up, arrives there for free.
- If you need Coupang, or you know the restaurants you want use Tabling kiosks, buy the carrier eSIM and do the registration on the first morning, inside the 08:00 to 22:00 window.
Korean phone number questions short answers
Does a Korea eSIM give you a Korean phone number?
A travel eSIM does not; every plan from Airalo, Saily, GigSky, Yesim, Ubigi, Holafly or Nomad is data-only. The Korean carriers' own tourist eSIMs do: LG U+ includes a 010 number on its data-plus-voice eSIM, SK Telecom's partner krsim includes one on plans of two days or more, and KT's tourist products all carry 010 numbers. All three need your passport registered before the number is live.
Can foreigners get an eSIM with a Korean number?
Yes, on a passport, for stays of 90 days or less, as a prepaid line. Since December 2025 one prepaid line per passport is the limit. LG U+ checks the passport at an airport counter, krsim registers it online after landing, KT checks it at purchase. Face authentication at activation is rolling out from July 2026 and is scheduled to cover foreign documents in the second half of the year.
Do I need a Korean number for Kakao T?
No. Kakao T accepts a US number; approval of a foreign account can take a day or two, so do it at home. Foreign cards often fail at payment, so set the app to pay the driver and use your card in the taxi. Your home number needs to be on to receive the sign-up code, which is the two-line setup every travel eSIM allows.
How can I get a free Korean phone number?
You cannot, in any way that passes a Korean SMS check. Virtual-number apps hand out numbers that Korean platforms reject, and the Korean carriers charge for theirs. The cheapest real 010 number is LG U+'s one-day eSIM at ₩6,500, about $4.70, checked September 7, 2026, and even that needs a passport check for the voice version.
Can I use my US phone number in Korea?
Yes, and you should keep it on. With a travel eSIM set as your data line and your home line left on with data roaming off, you receive calls and texts on your own number for free while all your data goes over the eSIM. Verification codes from US banks, and from every Korean app that has opened up, land on it. The only thing it cannot do is pretend to be a 010 number.
Most visitors need data, not a number
